Specificity can make one bonkers alright. Or, it can help one clarify goals/directions. I wonder how one would identify specifically "better off". Better off than what specifically? Perhaps a more useful question might look like, "In what specific ways does doing/not doing this help/not help me achieve my goals or support/not support my life direction/purpose?" If you can't answer the question with specifics, maybe it's time to identify and define some goals and directions so you can answer the question. Thanks again. ;-)

Ah yes. You got me on that one. Virtually every word can be tested for specificity- it can drive me bonkers.

So let's rephrase that to "Does this get me better off than I am now?"

Cheerios!

Thanks for the simple test. It certainly cuts to the chase. Then, of course, you must define the word "well" - otherwise the overgeneralization thinking error may well destroy your test.

Thanks again for the useful comment.

To that list of empowering thinking, I'd add the Ecology Test. Whenever confronted with some fact or opinion, just think "Will this serve me/us well"?

It's a good test of toxic thinking.
