Get 7 Hours of Sleep and No More

Another study concludes that sleep problems increase risk of serious life complications – even death. Research and analysis of evidence from studies done by the University of Warwick Medical School and others over 7-25 years of more than 470,000 people in several countries including the U.S. concludes that sleep deprivation can be deadly and definitely affects health.

If you sleep less than six hours per night and have disturbed sleep you stand a 48 per cent greater chance of developing or dying from heart disease and a 15 per cent greater chance of developing or dying of a stroke.” (Professor Francesco Cappuccio, study author)

Folks, that is significant risk!

“The trend for late nights and early mornings is actually a ticking time bomb for our health so you need to act now to reduce your risk of developing these life-threatening conditions… There is an expectation in today’s society to fit more into our lives. The whole work/life balance struggle is causing too many of us to trade in precious sleeping time to ensure we complete all the jobs we believe are expected of us.”  (Cappuccio)

Sleep is important! Logic dictates that no matter how important your job is, you won’t get it done if you’re dead! Or if you suffer a stroke as a result of lost sleep over it!

This and other similar studies presents powerful ammunition to present your boss/management if they are requiring you to lose sleep on a regular basis for your job. If the company you work for doesn’t care about your sleep, you need to look for another company to work for. Unfortunately, those who work for themselves or who own small businesses are at highest risk for serious health problems because they, more frequently than their employees, tend to lose sleep on a regular basis.

Regardless of what some new age gurus say, we need 7-8 hours of good solid shut-eye every night (but no more!). Those who believe they can “do quite well” with less are fooling themselves and placing their health at tremendous risk. I’ve met several entrepreneurs who claim they don’t need more than 4-5 hours of sleep every night. I also know a couple who have died of heart disease directly attributable to stress (and very likely sleep deprivation).

Study co-author, Dr Michelle Miller explains further: “Chronic short sleep produces hormones and chemicals in the body which increase the risk of developing heart disease and strokes, and other conditions like high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes and obesity”.

Cappuccio also warns us about going too far the other way – sleeping overly long. Sleeping more than nine hours at a time may be an indicator of illness, including cardiovascular disease. He also points to the Goldilocks time frame:

“By ensuring you have about seven hours sleep a night, you are protecting your future health, and reducing the risk of developing chronic illnesses. The link is clear from our research: get the sleep you need to stay healthy and live longer.”
