Hi Aadrian,

Good question! The concept (of a non-random joining of sperm and egg) was proposed several years ago and presented fairly recently on Discovery Channel. I'm afraid I'm a pretty poor researcher because I did not write down any of the studies the program referenced (my bad!). My only excuse is that I was sitting comfortably watching rather than taking notes.

I was so taken with the idea that somehow the egg and sperm "know" each other that I had to write about it. Now, how many of the sperms are compatible with any given egg I don't know and I don't think it was spoken of in the program. Still, the idea struck me as purely awesome.

I believe in accidents and randomness, but this really rocked my boat when I saw that program on Discovery.

And now that you've presented the question, I think I'll investigate further - I do like to back up my claims with at least some evidence... ;-)
